IFR Rating
The IFR rating requires that the student exhibit a great deal of skill in controlling the aircraft. With this rating, you are allowed to fly "in the system" with the big guys in both visual conditions (good weather) and when flying an instrument equipped airplane in almost all weather conditions. At the end of your training you won't fly reference to the ground or the horizon as you've been taught when you got your private or commercial license, but by the navigation and flight instruments alone. This means that you can fly in clouds as long as the weather permits and the aircraft is properly equipped. If you have your night rating and your VFR-OTT rating, then your already half way there. This is a great rating to have if you fly cross country much. Since you can takeoff on a cloudy day when others can't, your much more likley not to be delayed simply becuase there are clouds in the sky!
Like the multi-engine rating, the IFR rating is a step up in pilot training skills and often considered a rung in the ladder towards a professional pilot career.
